The Old Machinery Club (TOMC)

The Old Machinery Club (TOMC) was formed on 5th February 1989 with 14 members present and six apologies. Currently the Membership stands at 98 financial members.

TOMC is involved with museums such as the “Old Butter Factory Museum” at Busselton; with some of our members involved with the restoration and preservation of their mechanical assets, as well as assisting on opening days with ‘hands on’ displays to entertain school parties and aged concerned coach tours.

Community Involvement: We display at some 25 events per annum with support to mainly agricultural and community fairs. We also assist in the raising of funds for community projects by way of educational displays at schools and museums, private or community run.

  • Quarterly meetings are held in the Town Hall of Burekup.

  • Monthly newsletter “Exhaust Notes” posted to all members.

  • Roger May’s” Machinery Museum in Pinjarra; where some of our members are involved in the running of this museum along with restoration and preservation projects.

  • Boyanup Museum - we also assist with preservation and restoration.

  • Dardanup Heritage Park - We not only assist with the manning of the museum on open days, but members have permanent displays on loan. We also assist with the preservation and restoration of the museum’s machinery.

TOMC Aim is to promote interest within the club and general public in relation to:

  • Vintage

  • Veteran

  • Unusual or unique farm and industrial plant and equipment

  • Other machinery or automotive equipment (old and new), including ‘Hands on’ displays such as rope-making and other interests from by-gone days

It is here that we value what interests the club member and what education they can offer to the general public.
To educate the young about our history and the preservation of our mechanical and allied artifacts.

The Machinery Preservation Club (MPC)

The Machinery Preservation Club (MPC) commenced with a small band of eleven enthusiasts during 1982 of which three are still active members. During these 28 years the MPC has actively pursued excellence in Preservation, Restoration, Education and Safety.

Our Club is recognised as a Charitable Organization for Taxation purposes and is affiliated with Museums of Australia. We take our exhibits to the people by attending Agricultural Shows, Special Events including Seniors Week, retirement complexes and other venues including schools when asked.

We are known, and have worked with the National Trust of Australia (WA), Museums Australia (WA), Heritage Council of WA, The Institution of Engineers (WA), The Royal Agricultural Society of WA, various city and shire councils, in particular the City of Swan, and local museums. A number of corporations, including BP Australia Ltd, Sadleir Transport, Midland Redevelopment Authority, the “Good Guy’s”, Queensland Rail, Australian Railroad Group and various other smaller companies have sponsored us for various projects undertaken.

The MPC publishes the “Old Ploughs and Pistons” on a quarterly basis (attached to website) and posted to members with a copy to the State Reference Library (Battye).

The Club Home is within the Old WAGR Railway Workshops at Block 3, Midland and has been for the past 14 years. The uniqueness here is that we use club and approved machinery to restore and preserve club and members assets along with other work for museums etc, like:

  • Engine restoration (2) for New Norcia Monastery.

  • Engine restoration for the Kwinana Historical Group.

  • Advice for the Heritage Council of WA (Wake’s Garage Katanning)

  • The Midland Redevelopment Authority.

  • Inspection of the Dedari Pump Station for the National Trust of Australia (WA), and Golden Pipeline inspection.

  • Shire of Mullewa – engine restoration.

Thirdly, we, within the club have many tradesmen and engineers from whom we seek education and advice. For our people we avail the clubs premises to members seven days per week, but especially on Sundays and Tuesdays, plus monthly meetings where the management Committee reports the month’s activities to the general forum. We also promote visits from other clubs to our premises; which assists in the bonding of club relationships.

Community Involvement: The MPC is highly active within the community by way of:

  • Attending various Agricultural and Regional Shows (approx six to ten per year)

  • Offering advice and assistance via the website: www.machinerypreservationclub.com.au

  • Attending local community based meetings, as a part of that community.

  • Assisting other organizations with restoration projects.

The Vintage Tractor & Machinery Association of W.A. (Trachmach)

Formed in 1981 with nine enthusiast members at Wagin, the name and logo was the brainchild of Peter Moyes, who remained an enthusiastic member until his passing.

The idea of a Historical club for WA came from a journalist, Mary Busher, who did a story on a Kukerin farmer who had a small collection of vintage tractors, in the Countryman Magazine.

The nine inaugural members have now grown to over 500 throughout WA, SA and NSW.

The first ever working field day on a Kukerin Farm, was a great success. We then realized machines had to be working and not a static display.

In March 1982, we exhibited the machinery at the Wagin Woolarama; then in September of that year, was our first ever exhibition at the Perth Royal Show. Thanks to the efforts of RAS Councillor Des Gaze, plus start of confirmation with the horse owners. Those early show years put us on the map and became a meeting place for city and country members. This exhibition is still very strong and is run by enthusiastic Perth members.

Tracmach members in WA have a huge collection of rare and Vintage Tractors & Machines; and you would be very lucky to see a number of these tractors at a field day anywhere in Australia.

Some of the following machinery that has been restored, and is in working condition:

  • The 4 cyl Titan

  • Bailer Tractor

  • F 30 Duck Bill

  • 20-40 Case (Prairy Tractor)

  • German Stock Crawler

  • 18-16 Junior (Inter)

  • Minneapolis 17-30

  • The Ival Tractor - and the list goes on.

The Chamberlain Machinery is very important to Tracmach, and one particular member has every model produced.

When we talk about the history of Tracmach, we must mention the Gary Brookes story. Gary was involved in the Transport industry. After visiting one of our early field days in Kukerin, Gary started to collect International Dozers.

In 2000 at the Kukerin Field Day, Gary brought up five Brookes Transport road trains loaded with Dozers and Tractors. The two largest were the Inter TD 24 and the Terex TC 12.

Gary then went on to build a Heritage Park on his property at Dardenup, near Bunbury. With the help of a few Tracmach members and others, the complex now consists of twelve large sheds, a working dairy, a working driven saw mill, printing press, old timber houses and a restaurant. This park is now called Dardenup Heritage Park. A visitor would not see anything like this working park anywhere else in Australia.

Sadly Gary passed away a few days before the opening. It is now run by his wife & family with a staff of volunteers.

Tracmach today is very actively involved in working days, letting the public see how the vintage tractors & machinery work in all their glory; with ploughing, seeding, dam sinking, hay making and harvest demonstrations

There are also large displays of Tracmach machinery shown around WA; such as the Dowerin Agricultural Field Day, and a variety of Agricultural shows and town historical celebrations around WA.

Tracmach WA is geared up for their largest challenge - The NHMA Fairbridge 2011 Rally - along with two other WA Clubs - The Old Machinery Club of WA Inc and Machinery Preservation Club of WA Inc.

Visitors will witness the greatest working display of WA History.
